Albert Andrew Bonholzer, University Carillonneur, was born on December 31, 1898, and was an alumnus of the Sewanee Military Academy and The University of The South. He served as University Organist in 1919-1920 after studying the organ as a student. His interest in playing carillon came after a tour of Europe in 1929 (he met his wife, Marion, on this same tour). After returning to the US, he studied under Harold B Simonds of St Chrysostom's Church in Chicago (where his wife was from) and later at The University of Chicago under James R Lawson. He was a member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America and of the American Guild of Organists. He was also the organist of his home congregation at Christ Episcopal Church of Tracy City and the owner and operator of the Tracy City Coca-Cola Bottling Company before it was sold to the current location in Chattanooga. Following the installation of the Leonias Polk Bells in 1959, he began instructing students in the playing of carillon and served in the position until 1984. He died on February 26, 1988 at the age of 89 and is buried in The University of The South Cemetery.
The carillon themselves were a gift to the university by W Dudley Gale III, in memory of his great-grandfather, university founder and US/Confederate general Bishop Leonidas Polk. and were installed during the construction of All-Saint's Chapel in 1958. The 56 bells, made of bronze and tin, were designed by Arthur Bigelow, who also supervised their installation. They were cast in the Les Fils De Georges Paccard foundry in Annecy, France during 1957-58. They were first played at the university on April 12, 1959.
